With global celebrations marking Earth Day in April, North Charleston-based Girl Scout Troop # 322 participated in environmental education programs as they worked on their community service projects.
To learn about the environment, scouts from # 322 were given a full tour of Fisher Recycling Center at the Navy Yard at Noisette. The tour was conducted by Chris Fisher, the award-winning “ecopreneur” who has developed novel uses for the recycling of glass, paper, and restaurant-generated waste products.
Closer to the natural environment, Megan Barkes, Executive Director of the Michaux Conservancy, held sessions of the “Food Web Game,” to test the scouts’ knowledge of indigenous plants, animals and micro-organisms in the wetlands. A discussion of the food chain among animals in Noisette Creek, was a focal point of the presentation.
After the tour, the scouts reported that they had a great time, highlighting the importance of eco-education for future generations of Americans.
